DIY Animal Flashcards

Hey ‘yall!

One of the first lessons I learned during this pandemic is that mom guilt is real and and it can overwhelm you if you don’t keep it in check. I found myself struggling to manage work calls, her schedule, keeping the house somewhat presentable [read: yesterday’s dinner plates making it into the sink]. I constantly felt like I was relying on the TV to baby sit her so I could just get through one 30-minute call. Those days where I had back to back calls were especially challenging because of course my dear daughter wanted to make sure everyone on the call knew she was present. 🙃

As we read different books and flash cards I noticed that the same type of animal would be referred to by different names i.e. rabbit vs. bunny rabbit or bunny, piglet and pig, sheep and lamb. This, of course, is confusing for a little mind, so I decided to make our own flashcards. I looked through all of her books and flashcards and looked for the 20 most common animals. I’m pretty happy with how they turned out considering I am no graphic designer. They get the job done, it was cheap to print and laminate, and I can say I made something by hand (sorta) for my baby. #MomOfTheHour

tips for making your own flash cards

  1. Use a tool like Canva or PicMonkey to make the cards super easy.

  2. I used 3in x 5in as the dimensions for the cards. This is a good size for little hands to hold.

  3. Find animal images with .png as the file format so that it has a transparent background and can be layered on any color background. If you have a pro Canva membership a lot of these animals are already cut out and in the tool.

  4. When you’re ready to print make sure you save it as a PDF.

  5. I laminated the cards as well since Jordy is in a teething phase and chewing on everything. It also makes bath time that much more fun since we can take the flashcards in the tub! Be sure you file the edges as they can be a tad sharp. If you decide not to laminate I encourage you to print on card stock.

Don’t have the time to create your own? Feel free to download Jordy’s cards in pink or blue.
